Tatarstan seeks closer education ties with Malaysia
Tatarstan and Malaysia are keen on working closely to enhance education in both countries.

Since knowledge fuels the economy, both countries have agreed that educational exchange programmes should be implemented, according to a press statement released here by the Tatarstan Investment Development Agency yesterday.

Tatarstan President Rustam Minnikhanov, who is on a three-day visit to Malaysia, said the republic’s leading universities were keen to participate in student exchange programmes.

“The future of our friendship depends largely on the students we educate today,” he said.

Minnikhanov arrived with a 40-member delegation to promote and expand bilateral relations in trade, investment, IT, biotechnology and higher education.

The president, who met Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, said he would like to see an increase in the number of Malaysians studying in Tatarstan.

Currently, three Malaysians are studying at the Kazan State Medical University.

The university is currently lobbying the Government to endorse its diplomas in Malaysia so that Malaysians who have studied in Tatarstan can practise medicine in Malaysia.

Minnikhanov is also keen to increase collaboration between Malaysia’s Islamic institutions of higher education and the Russian Islamic University.

He added that students and professors at the Russian Islamic University could learn about Malaysia’s rich education system which promoted “true and tolerant Islam”.

Minnikhanov also met former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who said both countries could expand bilateral trade by focusing on the halal industry.
